Pathophysiology

The exact mode of action for Bronchitol is unknown, but it is believed to target the underlying pathophysiological airways’ defect in CF

Bronchitol provides a high and sustained osmotic load2,3

  • Non-ionic Bronchitol has low permeability across the airways’ epithelia4 which gives sustained effect2
  • Bronchitol effect on the airways surface layer (ASL) remained significantly higher than
    isotonic saline at 48 hours2
  • With highly permeable ionic substances the osmotic effect may be transient4
